The Next Chapter in Halo Comics, Halo: Escalation

Halo: Escalation will hit shelves on December 11. Chris Schlerf, lead writer on the Halo 4 videogame, will write the new series. The art for the first three issues will be handled by Omar Francia, known for his work on the comic adaptations of the Mass Effect and Star Wars: Legacy series. Dragon Age comic artist Anthony Palumbo will be illustrating Escalation’s covers seen below.

Writer Schlerf calls Escalation a part of a bigger effort from Halo developer 343 Industries to develop and improve the story aspects of the series. Halo in general has always had some great characters,” Schlerf says, “more, I think, than it’s been given credit for.” The first issue of the new series will begin, Schlerf says, in the midst of a violent assault from forces determined to stop diplomatic talks between the Arbiter and the Brutes, powerful enemies from Halo lore.

Halo: Escalation‘s plot will cover “how the events of Halo 4 have helped define the destiny not only of the Chief but of the galaxy as a whole,” Schlerf told Wired in an email. The plot of Halo 4, which Microsoft released for Xbox 360 last year, focused primarily on the relationship between the Master Chief and Cortana characters. The comics will flesh out the wider context of the game’s world, Schlerf said.

Thoughts on Halo: Initiation

Halo has always been known for its expansive Universe from graphic novels, to comics, to movies. Now fans are treated to yet another comic to dive deeper into this world. When you ask why Halo fans defend its story, it’s because of books like this, books we take the time to read and understand further than what you think you can just pick up in the game and judge. Now that Halo 4 has ended we are now getting more pieces to the puzzle that either answers our questions about things in the past, present, or what we can expect.

*Spoilers Ahead*

This is the story of Sarah Palmer and her rise from Orbital Drop Shock Trooper to a Spartan Commander. Her before she was a super soldier defending humanity as part of the Spartan IV program, and instead carrying out the most dangerous missions behind enemy lines. Not only is this her story, but it’s the origin of the Spartan IV program as well. Brian Reed constructed a great story which really allows you to understand how the Spartan program became so stable.

Halo InitiationThis book’s first story arc which is only three issues gives you so much more insight as to the state of the Halo Universe and how things are as they are right now. Not to be rude, but it shows how aliterate the critics of the game can be because these are the same people who will question it yet will never look into any of the lore such as this for a better understanding. We as fans can appreciate this, but it’s definitely something you have to invest time in to understand the layers and gaps each of these stories add and fill.

Here we see the new UNSC Infinity, the UNSC’s newest and most sophisticated flagship. Though as such and being the power house that drives the UNSC’s exploration, it proves to be a target for a group of insurgents led by what can only be described as the first Spartan IV. Palmer is amongst the first of the Spartan IVs and even then you find out that there is another type of Spartan out there though still a Spartan IV. You’d find it amazing that they actually attempted to create Spartans who have unbreakable bones and possess strength only obtainable with a suit. Only one of those ten who underwent the procedure, Isla Zane survived though became unstable mentally. It became up to Sarah Palmer and a bunch of rookie Spartans to defend Infinity from her and her group of insurrectionists. The insurgents have been an ongoing problem for the UNSC for the longest time now, it’s good to see that they are still relevant in this situation.

Fans are even treated to the appearance of a character from the events of Halo Reach that hadn’t been seen since. Jun returns and here you find out that it is actually he who picks Palmer to be among the first Spartan IVs. He can even hold his own without armor too.

In fact, it is also because of Zane that Spartans became in charge of themselves because they couldn’t trust ONI, the Navy, or Military to handle them. That is why Palmer is in charge of them and why for the most part they act on their own.

From start to finish of this three-part series reveals the story of how Commander Sarah Palmer became a Spartan-IV and leads directly into the exciting new mobile game from 343 Industries, Halo: Spartan Assault. Sarah Palmer and her new comrade Spartans are thrust into action when a violent insurgent group attempts to seize the UNSC flagship Infinity. Brian Reed really uses his connection to 343 in order to make that connection to the games which deliver an extended story that engages its fans.

NYCC 2013: Marvel’s House of Ideas Panel

Marvel Comics had its House of Ideas technology panel today, discussing all forms of Marvel tech from the publisher’s Unlimited Plus program, the Marvel Comics App, Infinite Comics and more. Panelists included Editorial Director of Marvel Digital Media Ryan Penagos, Director of Digital Publishing Ron Perazza, Marvel VP of Games Production TQ Jefferson and Infinite Comics writers Kieron Gillen and Al Ewing.

Project Gamma

One of Perazza’s current projects is Project Gamma, which will help to explore all avenues of storytelling afforded by a tablet. “What if you could incorporate sound into a comic book?” Perazza said. “Without audio, movies are a lesser experience. If we can add [music] themes for characters. The idea behind Project Gamma is to figure out a way to do that in a digital comic book.”

Infinite Comics digital initiative

The Infinite Comics digital initiative was up next, and Perazza described the format of the comics. “We can pace things a little differently, we can bring in speech bubbles and text bubbles to help tell the story,” said Perazza. Gillen and Ewing have a brand-new Infinite Comic starring Iron Man. “Before we got the idea of bringing him into the Guardians, I had a completely different story,” said Gillen. “I was probably never going to use that story, but then the Infinite Comic came up.” The panel showed pages from the first issue of the new Infinite Comics, and every Tuesday, a new Infinite Comic will get posted via the Marvel Comics App for a full year.

Marvel Original Video initiative

Moving on, Penagos gave an overview of the Marvel Original Video initiative, including “Earth’s Mightiest Show” hosted by Blair Butler, “The Watcher” and — of course — “What The–?” The panel showed the most recent episode of “What The–?” which involves the Rocket Raccoon getting frustrated with Thanos, Terrax and Annihillus after they call him cute. The shorts are created by Alex Kropinak, who Penagos called “a mad genius.”

Marvel AR

Penagos described the digital initiative that adds bonus digital content to all of Marvel’s comics. “The video team and the editorial team are working on a series that will feature in the comics,” he said as an introduction to “As the Page Turns.” The first video of “As the Page Turns” saw the Marvel editorial staff gathered around the table as Nick Lowe and Tom Brevoort received pitches from Ellie Pyle to see if her pitch was in a mythical book that contained all the Marvel stories past, present and future. When Brevoort and Lowe opened the book though, the pages were blank.

Marvel Games

Jefferson discussed the recent announcement of the “Amazing Spider-Man 2” game for XBox One PS4, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U and PC, as well as “Amazing Spider-Man” for PS Vita. “Picture if you will the city at night, sirens screaming, criminals, Easter Eggs about Fisk Tower. Spider-Man upside down, end scene!” said Jefferson, attempting to describe the trailer. “The way we like to approach movie-based games is movie-based games should never be about the movie. You’ve seen the movie, you want more of Spider-Man, not what you’ve already seen.” Christos Gage provided the story for the “Amazing Spider-Man 2” games, and while some villains from the movie will feature in the game, there will be plenty of other villains as well.

The game features a Heroes or Menace system, which will make the world respond to how players act as Spider-Man. “If you’re not being responsible — say you’re taking the path of power instead of responsibility, then the city will respond in kind,” Jefferson said. “The game will be harder to play if you’re not playing the role of the hero.”

Another major video game release for Marvel is “LEGO Marvel Super Heroes,” which has over 140 characters. The panel showed a video of the gameplay, which started off with Iron Man flying, Captain Britain driving, Venom, Arnim Zola, Squirrel Girl, Stan Lee, Howard the Duck. a Sentinel, Iceman, Thor, She Hulk, Hulk, Ghost Rider, Green Goblin, Galactus, Spider-Man, Mystique, Kraven the Hunter, Deadpool, the Fantastic Four and the massive scale of the LEGO Marvel U. Black Bolt and Ant-Man will also join the game. Day one, there will be DLC for “Thor: The Dark World.”

A “Thor: The Dark World” mobile game is set to release from Gameloft, which will be free-to-play. Christopher Yost wrote an original story for the game that takes Thor through many of the nine worlds in an attempt to stop Malekith from plunging everything into darkness. “It touches on some of the things you’ll see in the movie, but we also have additional characters,” said Jefferson. “The game has something like 10 different Thor costumes. I’m very happy to say that Beta Ray Bill will be a playable character.” The game will also feature different hammers that players can upgrade and master with “90 or so” missions. The release is set to time around the film’s November 8 release.

“Avengers Alliance,” the social game, will come to Android later this month. The newest Spec-Ops mission will reward characters with a playable Loki character. “Marvel Heroes,” the MMO, is also free-to-play, will expand into Asgard and Jotunheim. “You’ll see Thor in a battle against Loki,” said Jefferson. Another event will essentially be “unwinnable,” which sees teams of X-Men defending the X-Mansion against wave after wave of villains and Sentinels until the heroes die.
