For some reason there is talk of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver being bad choices for the next Avengers movie. That they aren’t Avengers, were barely Avengers, or they don’t like the casting. Things that really just seem like complaining without giving Whedon a chance to show what he has planned. Avengers has shown that we as viewers owe him that much.Especially to know the source material before dismissing what he apparently knows more about when it comes to the Avengers by people’s reactions.
Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were Avengers way longer than they’ve been X-Men, they are mainly associated with the Avengers given their history with them. Elizabeth Olsen hasn’t even began filming as Scarlet Witch and there already is criticisms based on her appearance, background and Scarlet Witch as a female hero. She does not have to look Jewish, or 100% like her comic counterpart. Whedon already stated that there would be a more real look to her costume. Aside from this it was emphasized REPEATEDLY that they are trying their best to avoid connection to the X-Men, seeing as they don’t have the rights to them. Not to mention that as a female hero, and for one of the most important in the Marvel NOW! world, she is not one to be dismissed. If people followed her story or the books in general, they’d know what impact she’s had on the Marvel Universe we have now.
Pietro and Wanda sought refuge from the Avengers after they have fled their homeland because they were being hunted for being mutants. As they were almost caught, they were rescued by Magneto(who had no idea he’s their father) and had them join his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. They worked for Magneto for some time till they realized that they were being used and escaped his grasp which is how they made their way to the Avengers. They were inducted along with Hawkeye to take the place of the charter members, who wished to take a leave of absence. At first it was looked upon as less capable than the previous roster, but defeating Kang the Conqueror, Doctor Doom, and other threats quickly proved their worth. Although the hot-tempered Quicksilver and Hawkeye often both rebelled against his orders, Avengers leader Captain America molded them into valuable team members.
It doesn’t hurt to know something as simple as this. Something that can be explained so easily, and without much effort either. This is all you had to know to have an idea as to what role they play in the Avengers. Not what Whedon is going for since he has to adapt it to the Cinematic World, but you get the gist of why assumptions against their characters are wrong. You have Youtube, Wikipedia, Wikias, people around you who indulge themselves in these books, this stuff is not hard to look up and understand. Ad if you are someone who reads them and still feels that way, you are doing yourself no favors. In fact you are ruining the film for yourself and it will not be Whedon’s fault. It will be yours and the world will keep turning.
You ask for Doctor Strange, yet till then you are given someone who wields powers and magic greater than his own. We are getting that magical element in this story thanks to these two, heck we are even getting a speedster before DC. Let that sink in and remember while you dismiss them.
Wait till you have seen some footage, or even seen them in costume before you cast judgement on Whedon’s choices. We owe him that much and it makes us all look spoiled when we start crying about stuff like this.
