Some time ago James Gunn said that he would be interested in doing a Thunderbolts movie amongst a few others after Guardians of The Galaxy. Now my attention quickly turns to Thunderbolts because it seems like the best choice to go with in the Cinematic Universe. He’s trying to keep things in the relatively obscure stable and that is a great approach to these movies when it’s heroes the general audience isn’t all too familiar with.
A quick recap for those unaware, Thunderbolts are a team of mainly reformed super villains. There isn’t an exact roster for it due to reincarnations, but the founding members of the team are Atlas, Citizen V, Mach-I, Meteorite, Songbird, and Techno. Of all the properties selected by James Gunn, Thunderbolts is likely the best choice because of this teams connection to S.H.I.E.L.D,. Themes of redemption and the nature of heroism are often featured in Thunderbolts comics. This is something that Marvel Studios can take advantage of when it comes to S.H.I.E.L.D.’s central focus in the Cinematic Universe. As recent news revealed, Ultron may be created by the government who are against the need of Avengers in the world. They could easily be the ones who put together this team and you need something that challenges the idea of what they stand for as heroes.I’d prefer the use of Luke Cage, MACH-V, Songbird, Ghost, Centurius, Satana, Troll, Boomerang, Moonstone, and Fixer. They would work best because they aren’t A-List villains who would be overshadowing each others or have too much expectations of them on-screen. Luke Cage, MACH-V and Songbird as the handlers works best because they have that attitude that sells being the ones in charge of a group of misfits such as the Thunderbolts. They are well established heroes and very badass in their own right.
As more of a supervillain team because of the inevitable direction most adaptations of the take, it could even be called Dark Avengers. Why? Thunderbolts is an anti-hero team that goes against the status quo. It’s not as if they are doing this for good reasons, this gets them out of doing their full-time or even being put to death. Seeing how everything is connected to the Avengers films, it would make sense that there’s something which fights against the world that they are trying to create. In general, if the name “Avengers” is in the title, it will probably be more successful.
Aside from this they could easily take different approaches if they want this movie to fit the Universe as its own Thunderbolts team. They could do a time skip and say these villains are ones they captured over time. They could be villains encountered in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as well. This team opens up for many possibilities that bring a new light to the Cinematic Universe and I for one hope Gunn goes with Thunderbolts over his other two choices. Cosmo would be a great tie-in to Guardians of The Galaxy, but unless they put some emphasis on Knowhere, he won’t have that attachment that could make his story appealing. Cosmo is the security chief of the spacestation Knowhere and a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
What do you think about a possible Thunderbotls movie? Are you in support of the idea? Who it sound better as Dark Avengers?
